Zingo Review

I bought this game for my children several years ago on the advice of the owner of my favorite toy store. I love board games, and my children were 3 and 5 then, and just starting to enjoy them as well. Well, we couldn't get the kids to stop playing Zingo. They played quietly for more than 2 hours. Since you can play with up to 8 players, we have had lots of neighborhood kids playing the game out on the front steps. Since then, I have bought at least 10 Zingo games -- I have given them to all my children's friends and I always keep a few around to give out for birthday gifts. Everyone loves this game.

LEGO Star Wars Rebel Scout Speeder Review

This set is essentially a made up, really chunky vehicle that's just something to go with these TO DIE FOR minifigs. The main set, the speeder, can carry 3 rebel troops, 4 guns, (2 pistols 2 rifles) and a Heavy blaster turret. The 4th minifig is suppose to walk or run alongside the speeder with his pistol or rifle. The turret slides off the back and is probably meant to secure a certain area before being picked up later on. The rebel minifigs can go on the speeder in various ways. First one trooper can drive it, one can act as a co-pilot, one can man the turret, but one has to just jog alongside. The minifigs themselves are the first of they're kind. LEGO has never made rebel helmets so snatch this set up while you still can.

SET Game Reviews

This game is the best invention since chess, if you want to improve your child's thinking ability! When I taught gifted students in grades 2-8, they would beg to play it. Kids would say over and over, "It''s hard, but it's fun". I read that it is an activity where the right brain and the left brain work together. The best thing about it is that it is not dependent on age or reading ability. There are 6 year olds who could beat me, and there are adults I can beat. A group of all ages can play together competitively, and no one has to hold back. Also, it is very light and portable for travel, or for just having handy if people are bored.. I take the cards out of the case, put a rubber band around them, and put them in my bag.

Melissa and Doug Cutting Food Box

This was a gift from Grandma for our 18 month old. Our daughter figured out how to cut a few months later. It's perfect for age two and up. She loves to cut up all the fruits, veggies, and bread. It comes with two cutting boards and two knives so a friend can play along too. It keeps her entertained for a long time and, as others have mentioned, teaches her the names of a few fruits and veggies along the way. Everything comes in a nice wooden box with a slide-on lid, which is great for storing all the pieces and for the fun of "in and out" of the box. My only complaint is that the velcro stickers which hold the pieces together are not compeletly durable. I've reglued a few of them, which has been no big deal to do. Overall a great toy, well priced, and nicely made.

Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime

Received the movie verison of Optimus Prime from my father as a father's day gift, quite apropos as he spent a good chunk on the orignal transformers for me 20 years ago. This is an excellent transformer, both as a robot and as a truck. As a truck, I much appreciated the rubber tires and very sturdy constuction. The robot mode is very detailed, with many articulation points. Battery-powered lights and sounds are a nice touch. The only con is the complexity of the transformation. Maybe I am getting old, but the first time, it took over an hour to get the transformation right. Hasbro using picture-only instuctions did not make this any easier.

Left Center Right Dice Game Review

When a friend of ours pulled out this game at our Christmas gathering I thought it sounded boring but was willing to give it a try. We ended up having so much fun with this!!! Everyone was able to play from my 5yr old up to my husband's elderly grandfather! We all had a lot of laughs (like who couldn't remember left from right!) and passed a few hours in a blink of an eye. We paid $3 for 3 poker chips and the winner took the pot. The money added an extra twist, but honestly I think it would have been just as much fun without the money. We are used to playing cards after dinner so it was natural to add that element to this game. Basically a good time was had by all, time went quickly, and it was extremely easy to learn. The game comes in a small tube that can be thrown in the glovebox or purse to pull out and play anywhere at any time. Buy it and you won't be disappointed.

Melissa & Doug Birthday Party Birthday Cake

What you get is a large wooden cake, wooden candles, decorations, a cake server and a wooden storage box with a clear sliding top. The cake is already been cut into slices that cold together through the wonder of velcro. The top of the cake also has lots of spots of velcro. The wooden candles can be stuck on this way. There are also cake decorations in the form of jelly beans, strawberries and a central birthday decoration. These are painted wooden disks backed with velcro. My daughter loves this toy (having first played with the pizza version at a friends house). I can not count how many times she has changed decorations and served me a piece of cake. All of the velcro works well and does not peel off. The candles can sometimes lean a little but I have heard no complaints. Although the pieces have been kicked around my hardwood floors countless times none of the paint has chipped. The only drawback is trying to use the cake cutter to remove the first piece. Velcro loves to grab and it is not always easy to get two spots on opposite sides to release at the same time if using the server. My daughter was not put off by this. All in all this is a well-made and durable toy. It is sure to be fun for any child who likes to help out in the kitchen. Remember that due to small pieces this is not appropriate for children with a tendency to put things in their mouths.

Fisher-Price I Can Play Guitar System

My five-year-old is addicted to Guitar Hero, so when I saw this product, I thought it would be a great way to wean him off that game and onto something that would actually help him learn. Unforutnately, the product doesn't live up to my expectations. The sound and "fun" quality just aren't there. The guitar isn't responsive enough, so he has to strum very hard to get it to recognize any input. The game doesn't do enough to teach how to use the guitar, and all the buttons and colors become very confusing. But this is for six years and up, you say? Well, I have just as much trouble as he does with it. Guitar Hero has already set the bar high for sound quality and graphics. Coming in late to the game, even if it is intended for a younger audience, this product should be of a little higher quality. The benefit was supposed to be that it teaches, but it does a very poor job of that as well.

The Settlers of Catan - New 4th Edition!!!!!

Settlers of Catan is a very unique game. It is very easy to learn but hard to master the subtleties of the game. It has several things that make this game unique. The main thing that makes this game unique is that the board can be different each time you play the game. The five land types that each produce a different resource are shuffled each time you play the game. So the board ends up being different each time the game is played. Another variable is the numbers that you lay down on the land types. The numbers are also shuffled each time. When you roll the dice, what ever number comes up, the land or lands with that number on it produce their resource - regardless of who's turn it is. So you opponents can actually help you on their turn. A third variable is ports. If you have a settlement on a port you can trade two of one type of resource you have for one you need with the bank. Normally you have to trade four of one resource, to get the one resource you want if none of the other players are willing to make a trade with you. The fourth variable is the thief. Anytime someone rolls a seven on the dice, they get to move the thief off off the property that he is on, and move it to any other piece of property and to take away one card at random from the hand of any players that have a settlement on that property. The thief automaticly steals what ever is produced on that piece of land for as long as he is there. This denies your opponents precious resources that they need to build roads, settlements, cities, and buy development cards. Development cards are soldier cards that you can buy to chase off the thief off your property and on to one of your opponents properties. Another type of development card is a victory point card that gives you one point toward the ten point total that you need to win. Settlers of Catan is designed for 3 to 4 players but you can have up to 8 players with the expansion pack.

Cranium

Before owning Cranium my favorite board game was Pictionary, which led to no small dillema--no one would ever play it with me because, quite simply, I would wipe the board with them. Ego trip? Yes. Family fun and togetherness? No. And so as not to cast my friends and family souly in the role of Sore Loser let me add that you wouldn't catch me dead playing Trivial Pursuit against my brainy brother. And then it happened--Cranium, the game that evened the playing field, the game that, as it states on the box, uses all areas of the brain. By combining areas of logic, trivia, creativity, and, well, making a fool of yourself Cranium leaves no one out, not even your friend who couldn't spell "Tuesday" if his life depended on it, much less spell it backwards. And you'll be laughing so hard as you watch Uncle Ned pantomome Madonna you won't even notice his team just took the lead. Great for parties and family get-togethers, this game sends everyone home happy, which is saying a lot from my crowd.

VTech Kidizoom Digital Camera Review

Got this camera as a present for my 3-year-old daughter - she loves it! She can switch it on and off by herself and is always asking for '[her] camera' so she can snap a picture. It's also absorbed a few harsh drops without any trouble. Caveats: - Though it's named "Kidizoom", it does not actually have any zoom functionality. (Not that a toddler would know what to do with it!) - Don't try to use a miniSD or microSD card with an SD adapter, and MMC cards won't work either - the camera will start up and immediately shut itself down again. A cheap plain SD card does fine - I put in a 256MB SD that I had lying around and, given that the built-in 16MB held well over 100 of her pictures, I'm sure she'll never fill it up. - Like many low-end digitals, it doesn't work all that well if lighting is dim, like indoors at night - it needs to be held more still than a toddler can manage. There is a flash, but it will totally bleach out anything taken at toddler-interest range (1-2 ft). - Unsurprisingly, leaving the camera tethered to the computer via USB for long periods (like overnight) will kill the batteries stone dead. As other reviews have mentioned, you will lose all the pictures stored in the camera's memory if this happens, which could result in tears - so put in that cheap SD card and set it as the default! Pictures saved there will survive a battery outage. - Videos are very low-res, so don't expect to show them on anything bigger than the built-in screen or postage-stamp size on a computer's media player. The microphone also records at a rather low volume. 4 AA rechargeables and the above-mentioned 256MB SD card later, my daughter is very pleased with her birthday present. I suspect she'll be using this camera for years!

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Standing Easel Review

This easel is a great buy! Very sturdy and high quality as most of mellisa and doug products. Colorful, kid friendly and easy to put together. Both the writing boards and the trays are adjustable for the height of your child. It folds up easy, but stands strong. This easel DOES have a place for a paper roll!! I did not think it did by the amazon description (I almost bought a more expensive one for the paper roll but decided to go with this and am so glad I did) ... the roll goes in the center between the boards and the paper comes up through the top and under a paper guide in front of the dry erase side. I can't image why you would spend more on another brand of easel, this one has everything I could think of wanting and is simple, solid wood, looks good and is super functional. This is the first review I have written, but wanted to pass on how happy I am with this product.

Transformers Movie Leader Optimus Prime

Optimus Prime was the top item on my Son's Christmas list after seeing the movie. We were unable to find the autobot leader at any of our local Toy Stores and Amazon came through. Our Son (7yrs) is very happy with the toy and is quite good at transforming between the Robot and Autobot forms. It has supplied hours of enjoyment thus far and isn't that really what a good toy is supposed to do when you get right down to it!

Magnetix I-Coaster Review

All of my family loved this toy. It involves a lot of real roller coaster physics. It can be a little frustrating at first because the ball flies off the track unless you get the angles correct. But after you get the hang of it, this toy is really fun for pretty much all ages. Do not buy this for impatient kids; they will get frustrated. The music feature is really nice. As well as continuous music, it has two gates that play selected music when a ball goes through them. There are quite a few selections for both kinds of music. The hyper stunts are very cool, too: a trampoline, a magnet that flips the ball around the outside of the track and onto a piece of track directly below it, a magnetic bar that carries the ball across the "ravine" to the other side, a circular piece of track that changes the ball's direction by 90 degrees (horizontally), a roller coaster loop, and a ###### piece of track for downward slopes (though that one is not particularly cool). 6 year olds should have adult/older brother help when building this toy. Pretty much all smart kids of 7+ can do this on their own. This toy takes a lot of trial and error, but is very rewarding when finished.

Transformers Movie Deluxe Class Bumblebee 2008 Camaro Review

This is a great product and in high demand. BEWARE OF PEOPLE EXPLOITING THE HIGH DEMAND FOR THIS TOY. IT SELLS AT RETAIL FOR $10. People should be ashamed of themselves asking $100 for a $10 dollar item. Hasbro will catch up with demand in the following months and this item will be easily available at Target, TRU and Walmart. The only reason it is so hard to find now is scalpers selling this toy online for ridiculous prices. Do not pay more that $15 for this toy.

DreamLife Superstar TV Plug-In Game

My daughter received this from her brother for Christmas. She has played previous versions at friends' houses and still found this one entertaining. Pros - The system is easy to set up and use. She was able to begin playing with little to no help. The graphics are improved from previous versions. There is more to do inside the game so she didn't make it through all the options in one sitting. Cons - I don't think children much older than 9-10 will enjoy this game long term. Children used to gaming interactions (ie Sims) may find the friend and job interaction overly simplistic.

Fisher-Price Sesame Street Pizza Party Elmo

My daughter just opened a pickup/delivery pizza place. She has Elmo standing on the front counter for all to enjoy. He us just so cute and sings great too. So does the pizza! She didn't want to destroy all of the surroundings that came with the box so she just cut off the top of the box and he is now displayed with the pizza boxes that came with him, and back of the box scenery. However, For anyone getting this for their child, I think they will be taking the batteries out after a couple of days. I think it's a great novelty.

V Tech - A Day on the Farm - V. Smile Baby Review

This product is nice. My son is mentally retarded and he loves it. He is seven years old but he is developmentally toddler stage. Melissa and Doug Horse Stable Stamp Set

My son was absolutely thrilled to receive this stamp set as a gift. He likes the realistic look of the horses and their scenery. I have to say that I also prefer the idea of her creating projects with realistic horses and not "pretty ponies". The stamps work well, though the stamp pad included is a little small. We have many other Melissa and Doug products in our home, and they tend to be very durable. I'm pleased with both the quality and the price!

LeapFrog ClickStart My First Computer Review

Bought this for our 3 year old's birthday and he absolutely LOVES IT!!! He was always interested in playing with our home computer and when I happened to see this while birthday shopping I bought it without reading the reviews, when i got home and read the reviews I was glad I bought it, now that he has actually played with it I am thrilled with this purchase!!! He adores this system and it is really educational, it is something I don't mind him playing with for hours on end which he frequently does. We are actually thinking about geting a TV especially for this since he uses it so much. He is learning so much from this system and on my work days when he is home with dad I can send him a postcard before I leave and he is thrilled to wake up and get his "mail". This is definitely one of the best purchases we have made. As far as the keyboard, it turns itself off after about five minutes, it will turn itself back on as soon as it is moved but it stays off after we put it away for the night! If you have preschoolers this is a MUST HAVE!!!

IlluStory Make Your Own Story Kit

Our son has written 2 books with Illustory already! He loves seeing the words that he writes typed onto the pages (by the company) and the drawings he does come out beautifully printed on the book. He is so excited and proud of himself when he shows his friends, family and teacher his publications! The book even comes with an About-the-Author page just like real published books! Everything that you need to write and draw is provided in the kit and the instructions are very easy to follow. In just a few weeks you get back a real hardcover book! The experience was so terrific, we plan on having him write a book each year so he can see how much his writing changes year after year. And just as soon as his new baby sister is old enough, we'll start her writing books with Illustory too. The books are a great family keepsake. We love them

WEBKINZ - Reindeer

The toy is nice, and well made. But Webkinz site. After all that is why we bought the toy to begin with. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I'll take a few steps back. You should have seen it. There was a daughter at the kitchen table with her new Webkinz toy. She had it all set up. The laptop and Webkinz site logged on, her new Webkinz animal facing the monitor. Every thing was laid out perfectly and ready for some fun and a adventure. Anyone could see her joy. Things where going very well, and we where happy to see her really enjoy herself and gain some understanding on the computer to boot. But soon problems began. Earned items began to vanish. webkinz dollars began to go missing. Log offs and drops became more and more common. Games would lock up or parts of the game would freeze. Bad site? So as other have stated, that picture of our happy little girl, as you can see, began to shrink and get smaller and smaller. Those sounds of joy changed. and that picture began to be replaced by a look and feeling of frustrating. She began to feel, as most would feel, frustrating. To say the least, we were very disappointing by technical problems that seem to only increase as the site becomes more popular. And customer Service is "REALLY" none existent other then a drop down list of questions and answers. And it is limiting in it's uselessness. We have even found that the email system seems to be designed to be a number of loops to keep customers from contacting them. The point goes on and on. But with out getting to long here, the site has a feeling of bug ridden and has many problems. And Ganz, the parent company of Webkinz, doesn't seem to care. We have contacted them 4 times by phone and twice by email. No replay as of this review. All in all I would say the toys are well made but the site has problems. Maybe it is a great way to teach kids how to deal with disappointing feelings that get bigger and bigger as they look into a none responsive screen as parents try to make it feel better.

Hasbro Electronic Hyper Slide

Be quick, pick the right colored hyper disc, and flick it under the arch before time runs out. The Hyper Slide from Hasbro packs three fast-paced electronic table-top games into one compact unit. Recommended for ages eight and up, these fast-sliding games for one or two players are fun and exciting for kids and adults.

Fun, Futuristic Table Top GameWith its sleek, arched design, Hyper Slide looks like a futuristic game. Resembling a hockey game for a table top, the object is to flip the pucks through the goal. However, in these games the goal can be scored from both sides of the arch, and there are four different-colored pucks, called hyper discs. The game's electronic unit calls out a color, and you must pick that color and sent it through the arc. It automatically detects whether you've passed the right disc or not. When not in operation, the hyper discs can be conveniently stored in a compartment on the side of the arch.
Three Games for Solo Play or Two-Person PlayThe Hyper Slide offers a few variations of play for your enjoyment. Two lighted buttons on the top of the Hyper Slide make it easy to choose which of the three games you want to play.
While the objects of the games are simple, playing them can be a fun challenge. The first game, "Fast Pass," is all about speed. The game commands a color and you've got to pass it through the goal quickly before the buzzer blasts. With "Add One," you've got to remember the order of colors. You start with a color and add one to the sequence each time you complete a round. "Code Buster" gives you 90 seconds to decipher the secret series of colors.
Best of all, you can play all these games with a friend or by yourself. With both "Fast Pass" and "Add One," you can even play head-to-head with another player or team. For solo play, the rubber "hyper band" is attached under the arch, bouncing the discs back to your side.
